What to Wear to a Cigar Lounge: The Women's Guide

Short answer: what to wear to a cigar bar as a woman is smart casual you can stand to wash — dark jeans or a midi skirt, a top in cotton or linen, closed-toe shoes, and hair up. Skip the silk and skip the suede. Everything in that room is going to smell like smoke by the time you leave, so wear what you don't mind laundering.

That's the whole rule. The rest of this is the stuff nobody tells you before you walk in.

I'm not the person who should be telling women how to dress. So I asked the four SOTLs who sit at my lounge on Thursdays, and I wrote down what they said. Most of it surprised me.

Nobody warns you about the chairs

Here's the first thing all four of them mentioned, and it has nothing to do with style.

Cigar lounges love leather furniture. Deep, low, well-loved leather chairs. If you show up in a short dress or bare legs, you will spend the night peeling yourself off that chair every time you shift. One of them called it "the sticky-chair problem" and said it ruined her first two visits.

Pants fix it. So does a midi skirt with tights. So does sitting on your jacket, which is what she does now.

Find out which kind of lounge it is first

"Cigar lounge" covers an enormous range. On one end you have members-only rooms like the Grand Havana Room, where membership is "by invitation only and is limited" (grandhavana.com, accessed September 2026) and the dress code runs business professional. On the other end you have shops with a back room, a TV, and a guy in flip-flops.

A lounge operator's own guide lays out the four tiers plainly — business professional, business casual, smart casual, and flat-out casual, where "jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers" are fine (The Brig Cigar Lounge, accessed September 2026).

Two minutes of homework settles it. Pull up their Instagram and look at what people in the photos are wearing. Or call and ask. Nobody has ever been annoyed by that question.

Default to smart casual if you can't tell. You'll never be the one who looks out of place.

The fabric rule

You're going to be in that room a while. A robusto runs up to an hour, and a Churchill takes 60 to 90 minutes (JR Cigars, accessed September 2026). If he's on his second one, do the math.

Smoke settles into whatever you're wearing. Some things let go of it. Some don't.

Wear: cotton, linen, denim, washable knits. Anything that can go in a machine on Sunday.

Leave home: silk, suede, anything dry-clean-only, and a wool coat you actually like. Also fur-trimmed anything — it holds the smell for weeks.

Hair up. Every one of them said this without being asked. Hair holds smoke worse than clothing does.

Five cigar lounge outfits that actually work

1. The Tuesday drop-in

Dark straight-leg jeans, a graphic cotton tee, white sneakers, hair in a claw clip. Nine out of ten lounges, this is right. It's also the easiest thing in the world to wash.

2. The date night

Midi skirt, fitted knit top, ankle boots. Layer a denim or leather jacket you can hang on the chair back — a jacket is the best smoke shield you own, because it takes the hit instead of your top.

3. The dressed-up room

Tailored trousers, a crisp cotton button-down, low heels or loafers. Business casual without the meeting. If the lounge has a wine list and cloth napkins, this is the one.

4. The summer patio

Linen pants, a cotton tank, sandals. Outdoor patios are a different animal — more air, less cling. You can get away with more, and your clothes will thank you.

5. The first-timer

Dark jeans, plain long-sleeve tee, flats. Boring on purpose. Your first visit you want to watch the room, not be watched by it. Read what to expect on a first lounge visit before you go and you'll walk in calm.

What not to wear

  • Anything dry-clean-only. You'll pay $18 to un-smoke a blouse.
  • Open-toe shoes with a long skirt. Ash falls. It's usually cold by the time it lands, but not always.
  • Heavy perfume. This one's etiquette, not style. Strong scent fights the cigars, and the regulars will notice. More on that in the cigar lounge etiquette guide.
  • Athletic wear. Even at casual lounges it reads like you wandered in from the gym. Some rooms turn it away outright.
  • A brand-new white coat. Learn from my wife. Once was enough.

Cigar lounge date night, specifically

If he's bringing you to his lounge, understand what's happening. He's showing you the room where he goes to be quiet. That's not nothing.

Dress one notch above the room. Not two. Two makes everyone stiff.

And take the cigar if it's offered. You don't have to like it. Ask for something mild and take it slow. You draw the smoke into your mouth, taste it, and let it go — that's the whole technique. The SOTL who's been at it longest told me she nursed one robusto over two hours on her first night and nobody said a word about it.

Getting the smoke out afterward

This is the part that decides whether you go back.

Don't dry it first. Heat sets the odor into the fabric, so confirm the smell is gone before anything goes in the dryer. For a wash, add half a cup of baking soda along with your regular detergent. For something you can't wash, soak it in equal parts distilled white vinegar and hot water for at least an hour, or overnight if it's bad. Or seal it in a bag with an open box of baking soda for several days (Whirlpool, accessed September 2026).

Easiest trick of all: hang it outside overnight. Fresh air does most of the work for free.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a dress to a cigar bar?

Yes. Go midi or maxi length in a washable fabric, and bring a jacket. The length keeps you off the bare leather, and the jacket takes the smoke so your dress doesn't.

Do cigar lounges have dress codes for women?

Some do, most don't. Members-only clubs and hotel lounges tend to run business casual or better. Shop-attached lounges are usually come-as-you-are. Check their social photos before you go.

What should I wear to a cigar lounge on a first date?

Dark jeans or a midi skirt, a knit or cotton top, ankle boots, and a jacket you can hang on the chair. One notch above the room, nothing you'd cry over if it smelled like smoke.

Will my clothes smell after one visit?

Yes, every time. An hour in a lounge puts smoke in everything, including your hair. Plan on washing what you wore. That's why fabric choice matters more than the outfit does.

Is it weird for a woman to go to a cigar lounge alone?

No. SOTL — Sister of the Leaf — is a real thing and the regulars use it without irony. Sit at the bar, ask the guy behind the counter for a recommendation, and you'll have three people talking to you inside ten minutes.

What shoes should I wear to a cigar bar?

Closed-toe, and something you can walk in. Ash falls, floors get swept a lot, and most lounges are a longer sit than you expect.

Wear this once and somebody will talk to you. I Smoke Cigars And Know Things in Red, $29.99.

The last thing

Wear something you'd be happy to be seen in twice. Because the thing about a good lounge is that you come back, and the second visit is when the room actually opens up to you.
