About Skip, Founder of Legacy Layers
Skip is the founder and owner of Legacy Layers, a family-owned cigar apparel brand started in 2023 and run out of Cincinnati, Ohio. He writes every article on this blog.
Why a t-shirt guy writes about cigars
Legacy Layers exists because of a gap Skip kept running into as a smoker: the cigar shirt market was split between gag tees with punchlines nobody would say out loud and plain brand swag that turned a guy into a walking billboard. Nothing in the middle. So he started designing the shirts he wanted to wear to the lounge.
That turned into a catalog of more than 670 cigar designs — state Cigar Society badges for all 50 states, pairing designs, vintage cigar animals, and insider slogans — printed to order in Cincinnati and shipped worldwide. Legacy Layers also supplies cigar lounges directly at wholesale.
The blog came out of the same place. Skip spends his days reading what cigar smokers and the people shopping for them actually ask: what to wear to a lounge, what to buy a husband who owns every accessory, whether to tip, how to not look like a rookie on a first visit. The answers on the internet were mostly written by retailers trying to sell cigars. These are written by somebody who sits in the chair.
What he actually knows
- The ritual, first-hand. Skip smokes premium cigars as a ritual, not a habit — the after-the-kids-are-asleep patio smoke, the Sunday coffee-and-football smoke, the occasional Saturday at the lounge.
- The culture. Brotherhood of the Leaf etiquette, herfs, victory cigars, tribute smokes, and the unwritten rules of a lounge — the parts of this hobby that don't show up in a product description.
- The gift-buyer's problem. Running the brand means hearing from hundreds of wives, daughters, and sons every holiday season who can't safely buy his cigars and don't know where else to start. Most of the gift guides here exist because of those messages.
- The apparel side. Garment blanks, fabric weights, DTG printing, sizing, and what a print actually looks like after a dozen washes.
How this content gets made
- Every statistic is tied to a named source and a date. Industry numbers come from the Cigar Association of America and trade press; consumer spending numbers come from published retail research.
- Product recommendations include honest third-party items, not only Legacy Layers tees. A guide that only recommends its own store isn't a guide.
- No health or medical claims, ever. This blog covers culture, ritual, style, and gifts. Legacy Layers sells shirts, not cigars.
- Guides are reviewed and re-dated as prices, products, and seasons change.
