BOTL, SOTL & the Brotherhood of the Leaf, Explained
SkipBOTL means Brother of the Leaf. It's what cigar smokers call each other — shorthand for a stranger who smokes what you smoke and will hand you a stick before he'll take your money. SOTL means Sister of the Leaf. Same thing, no gatekeeping. There are no dues, no card, no handshake. There's the leaf, and there are the people who sit down with it.
That's the definition. Now here's what it actually means, because four letters don't carry the weight.
What Does BOTL Mean?
B-O-T-L. Brother of the Leaf.
"The leaf" is tobacco. Smokers say it that way on purpose. It sounds a little reverent, and that's the point — you don't call it a product when it's the thing that buys you an hour of quiet after the kids go down.
You'll see BOTL in forum signatures, in comments, on a name tag at an event, and across a guy's chest at the lounge. It works two ways. As an address: "Welcome aboard, BOTL." And as a description: "He's a BOTL, he'll take care of you."
It isn't a rank. Nobody gets promoted. A guy six weeks in with a $7 stick is as much a BOTL as the collector with a walk-in humidor. That's the part outsiders miss.
Wear the nod, not a billboard.
Our cigar tees are designed for the guy who wants to be recognized at the lounge without looking like a gag gift. 100% ring-spun cotton Softstyle, $29.99, S–3XL (2XL and up run a little higher). Bigger guys: we go to 4XL, 5XL and 6XL.
What Does SOTL Mean?
SOTL means Sister of the Leaf. Women smoke cigars. They always have.
Two of the sharpest palates at my local shop belong to women. One of them corrected me on a wrapper last spring in front of four guys. I deserved it.
The term has organized weight behind it now. The SOTL Global Movement, founded by Dr. Anastasia Psomiadi, says on its site that it has been working to empower women in the cigar industry since 2017 (accessed September 2026). Regional groups like Sisters of the Leaf SoCal run their own herfs.
Simple etiquette: don't call a woman a BOTL by reflex. She's a SOTL. If you're not sure what she prefers, ask — it takes four seconds and it lands well. We wrote a whole piece on cigar shirts for women for the same reason.
Where "Brothers of the Leaf" Came From
Nobody has a birth certificate for the phrase. It grew out of early cigar message boards, back when the hobby lived on forums instead of feeds.
One of those boards still carries the name. BOTL.org runs as the "Brothers of the Leaf® Cigar Forums," complete with the registered mark on the masthead (accessed September 2026). Its founder, a member known as Eric, ran it for years before he passed.
The name got real cigars attached to it, too. Drew Estate made cigars bearing the BOTL.org name in 2012 and 2013 for a single retailer, then brought the blend back in 2020, per halfwheel. A forum handle became a cigar band.
And "brotherhood" isn't decoration. It's the same instinct running through a century of famous cigar smokers — the cigar was always the excuse to sit with somebody.
It's Not a Club. It's a Nod.
Here's the part that's hard to explain to people who don't smoke.
You pull into a gas station. Guy at the next pump has a stick going. You nod. He nods. Four minutes later you know what he's smoking, where he buys, and that his wife also makes him sit ten feet from the door.
That's the whole thing.
On the CIGAR.com forums, one member described it as "instant connections like you have been best friends since before birth." Another said he'd "stop and help a cigar smoker the same way I'd stop and help a service member." When a longtime member died, the thread said it plain: "it was immediately apparent that he was one of us." (forum.cigar.com, What does BOTL mean to you)
One of us. That's the highest compliment in the hobby, and it costs nothing to give.
How Brothers of the Leaf Actually Act
The culture shows up in three habits. Learn these and you'll follow any lounge conversation.
- The herf. A gathering. Works as a noun and a verb — "we herfed until one in the morning." Could be six guys in a garage or 300 at an event.
- The bomb. A box of cigars mailed to another smoker who didn't ask for it and can't pay you back. Somebody had a rough month, so a box shows up. That's a bomb.
- The pass. A box that travels by mail from member to member. You take one, you put one back in, you ship it on. It runs entirely on trust, and it mostly works.
If any of that vocabulary is new, start with our cigar slang glossary — it's the map for the whole culture, from vitola to nub.
The Veteran Thread
You can't talk about brotherhood here and skip the military side of it.
Operation: Cigars for Warriors ships premium cigars to deployed American troops. Cigar Journal reported in August 2021 that the group, a registered 501(c)(3), had donated more than 1.2 million cigars since 2012. Its own site now puts the running total above 1.7 million (cigarsforwarriors.org, accessed September 2026).
Ask around your lounge. Somebody there has mailed a box downrange, or opened one.
How to Earn the Title
You don't apply. You just act like one. Five rules cover it.
- Bring one extra. Always. The spare stick in your case is the fastest friendship in the world.
- Ask before you recommend. Nobody wants your favorite maduro pushed on them at 9 a.m.
- Don't talk through the last third. That's where the cigar gets good and where a man gets quiet. Read the room.
- Learn one name a visit. The regulars remember who remembered them.
- Pass it on. Somebody handed you a cigar once and wouldn't take a dollar. Go be that guy.
Do those five for a month and you'll get the nod without ever saying the word out loud. Still working up to your first lounge visit? Here's exactly what to expect.
BOTL and SOTL: Quick Answers
What does BOTL stand for?
Brother of the Leaf. It's how cigar smokers refer to one another, online and in person. "The leaf" means tobacco.
What does SOTL mean?
Sister of the Leaf — the same term for women who smoke cigars. Groups like the SOTL Global Movement have used it since 2017.
Is BOTL an official club you can join?
No. There's no roster and no dues. BOTL.org is a long-running forum that uses the name, but the title itself belongs to anybody who smokes and acts right.
What's the difference between a BOTL and a herf?
A BOTL is a person. A herf is the get-together. Brothers of the Leaf herf; the herf doesn't make you one.
Can I call someone a BOTL if I just met them?
Yes, and most guys like hearing it. Just use SOTL for women, or ask what she prefers.
Do I have to smoke expensive cigars to be a BOTL?
No. Price has nothing to do with it. The $6 stick on your own porch counts exactly as much as the $30 one.
One Last Thing
The reason this phrase outlived every version of the internet is simple. Most hobbies give you gear. This one gives you a room full of people who'll save you a seat.
That's worth wearing.
